Definitions of Terms on the Arctic Health Website
  • Arctic

is defined here as including all of Alaska and any region where arctic conditions exist.  This site will identify, organize, and make accessible publications and research that meet this definition.  Initially, the focus will be on U.S.-sponsored and U.S.-based material and websites.
  • Health

  • is used in its broadest sense, and includes physical, mental, social / cultural, and environmental aspects.

  • Research

encompasses basic, applied, laboratory, and community, as well as research conducted in partnerships.
  • Literature

  • includes peer-reviewed, preprints, and reports, as well as conference proceedings and depositions in public databases that were part of a formal publication.  Each document must be:

        • durably recorded on some medium,

        • publicly available (not necessarily free of charge),

        • immutable (i.e., should remain in the same form),

        • readily accessible and retrievable over time (i.e., through a persistent identifier), and

        • version controlled.
